Eider Duck Day – 20th March

Eider Duck Day 2022

As part of Eider Duck Day 2022 we launched a short film about Northumberland’s Eider Ducks, made as part of the Eider Aware Project

We also spoke four people from different walks of life who told us more about why Eiders matter to them: Paul Morrison from RSPB Coquet Island, Dr David Petts of Durham University, Sal Bennett from St Mary’s Island Wildlife Conservation Society, and local musician Hector Gannet.

Eider Duck Day 2021

We declared the 20th of March 2021 as Eider Duck Day and held a series of online events to celebrate this most loved of seaducks.

As part of the day, Paul Morrison from RSPB Coquet Island gave a presentation about Northumberland’s Eider Ducks:

The 20th of March is, not uncoincidentally, also the Feast Day of St Cuthbert. The links between St Cuthbert and Eider Ducks go back for centuries. Here Jessica Turner, from the Northumberland Coast AONB, tells us more about St Cuthbert and Anglo-Saxon Northumbria

Fiona Greenwold from ERIC North East told us about the importance of wildlife recording and introduced our Eider Aware recording app

We also heard from a wide variety of our partners about various aspects of Eider Duck conservation:

And we even had a demonstration about how to make your own floating Eider bath toys

Eider Duck Day 2022

We will be holding a second Eider Duck Day on the 20th March 2022. Keep an eye out for details.
